A Hat for Krom's Mom

Krom's Mom

It's Krom's Mom's 80th birthday this weekend. She was born in 1929 along with other notables. Sometimes it's easy to forget that Anne Frank and Jackie Kennedy Onassis were born the same year.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2009, she and I will be going to the Central Park Conservancy's 27th Annual Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon. We look forward to this date on the social calendar because it's always an afternoon filled with the beauty of the Conservatory Garden, the resonant sounds of strings and horns, and a vibrant show of finery.

As a gift for my mom, I decorated her hat for this occasion. She gave me a white cotton Helen Kaminski hat. I had a bit of writer's block. Usually I have supplies at the ready, and that's where my inspiration comes from. However, this white hat was like a white canvas, the possibilities were endless. To narrow it down a bit, I asked my mom what she was planning to wear to the lunch. She showed me a beautiful white Akris suit with a fuschia circle pattern. This was the catalyst I needed.

I remembered that tucked underneath the dining room table (where I keep my supplies) was an old Yves Delorme duvet cover with a circle pattern on one side and orchids on the other. I decided to cut out the leaves and sew them to her hat, and make a flower from the circle patterned fabric.

Bizarre Bazaar Trend Advice

In April, Harper's Bazaar tells us color blocking is out.

In May, Vogue tells us it's in.

Also, in April, Bazaar tells us solemn shades are out,

yet in May, B tells us to keep our solemn colored items,

and to invest in even more solemn colored clothes and accessories.

In May, embellished flip-flops are allegedly out.

However, in the same issue, we are told to buy embellished sandals, and then a few pages later are shown a flip-flop version of the sandal.

In May, boatnecks are out.

Yet in April and May, we are shown boatnecked items we should buy.

Next we are advised to banish dainty accessories,

yet they are included in Spring's Hottest Looks in the April issue, and look perfectly good on Hilary Rhoda.

Finally, in May, we are told that fanciful floral add-ons are in.

This point was already made in April's Special Couture section

where beautiful Roger Vivier sandals appear.

But, in the same issue, we are told to store our floral items.

It just goes to show you that the experts don't always know what they're talking about. And that's why you should be skeptical when people make blanket or absolute statements about style or fashion. There is no magic formula; there's just gut, instinct, and a sense of adventure that make style stars. If there were a formula, we would all look the same.
