Buying Good is Doing Good

It takes the women of the Wayuu tribe of Colombia and Venezuela up to a month to weave a susu woven bag, working eight hours a day, every day.

Buying the susus directly from the Wayuu Taya Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps improve the lives of Latin American indigenous communities while maintaining and respecting their traditions, culture and beliefs, seems like the most shrewd and socially aware thing to do. The proceeds from the sale of all the items in its online gift shop go to benefiting the Wayuu people. The bags are made at Shukumajaya, the foundation's women's center where women are educated on parenting and nutrition, family planning and hygiene. All bags are one-of-a-kind.

J. Crew sells the bags for $175 at its Madison Avenue store in Manhattan, 1035 Madison Avenue; SURevolution is selling the bags for $430 at its Bridgehampton shop, 2462 Main Street, 631. 613. 6565; the Wayuu Taya Foundation is selling the bags for $140. You do the math.

Receiving can be as beautiful as Giving.
